Shinawatra University: A Leader in Sustainability UI GreenMetric Initiative Overview

At Shinawatra University (SIU), sustainability is at the heart of our academic mission, campus operations, and community engagement. As part of our commitment to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, we have implemented transformative initiatives to foster environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and innovation. Below is a summary of our achievements, supported by downloadable data resources for transparency and collaboration.

1. Academic Excellence in Sustainability
SIU offers 51 dedicated courses across disciplines like architecture, engineering, nursing, and business, all aligned with global sustainability goals. These programs equip students with the knowledge to address pressing environmental and social challenges.

2. Cutting-Edge Research
We invest in impactful research to drive sustainability innovation:

  • 2021–2023 Research Funding: $210,131.71 USD dedicated to projects like mangrove conservation, renewable energy adoption, and mental health initiatives.
  • 20+ annual scholarly publications on sustainability topics.


3. Campus & Community Engagement
SIU hosts dynamic events and campaigns to promote eco-conscious practices:

  • Green Campus Initiatives: Energy/water conservation, waste reduction (3R principles), and green infrastructure projects.
  • Community Projects: Mangrove planting, charity drives, and health literacy programs.


4. Alignment with Global Goals

All initiatives are mapped to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing:

  • SDG 4 (Quality Education): Sustainability-integrated curricula.
  • SDG 7 (Clean Energy): Renewable energy research.

SIU's SMART Objectives for Environmental Sustainability Education & Engagement

Objective 1: Curriculum Integration of Environmental Sustainability

  • Specific: Integrate environmental sustainability modules into all undergraduate degree programs across the university.
  • Measurable: At least one sustainability-related course or unit to be included in 100% of undergraduate programs.
  • Actionable: Form a task force from each faculty by Q3 2025 to revise curriculum structures and identify suitable courses for integration.
  • Relevant: Aligns with SIU’s commitment to fostering environmental awareness and promoting sustainable development through education.
  • Time-bound: Complete curriculum revisions and launch integrated courses by the start of the 2026 academic year (June 2026).


Objective 2: Launch of an Interdisciplinary Degree in Environmental Sustainability

  • Specific: Develop and introduce a new undergraduate program focused on environmental sustainability and sustainable development.
  • Measurable: Program proposal to be completed and approved by the academic council; enroll at least 30 students in the first academic year.
  • Actionable: Collaborate with external experts and existing faculty from science, business, and liberal arts to co-design the degree.
  • Relevant: Supports SIU’s strategic goal of producing graduates equipped to address global environmental challenges.
  • Time-bound: Launch the degree program by the 2027 academic year (June 2027).


Objective 3: Community Environmental Outreach & Education Program

  • Specific: Conduct annual environmental education outreach activities targeting at least 3 communities per year.
  • Measurable: Reach a minimum of 300 participants annually through workshops, tree planting, and awareness campaigns.
  • Actionable: Led by students and faculty from relevant disciplines, in partnership with local administrative organizations (e.g., Koh Kret, Khlong Khon).
  • Relevant: Builds community capacity for sustainable living and environmental stewardship, aligning with SIU’s social responsibility goals.
  • Time-bound: Initiate and complete the first full outreach cycle by December 2025 and continue annually.


Objective 4: Public Awareness Campaign on Environmental Issues

  • Specific: Launch a year-long social media and on-campus campaign to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues.
  • Measurable: Achieve at least 10,000 engagements (likes, shares, comments) across all platforms and host 4 public seminars.
  • Actionable: Run by the SIU Sustainability Club in collaboration with the Marketing and Communications Office.
  • Relevant: Enhances SIU’s role in educating the broader public and fostering a culture of sustainability.
  • Time-bound: Launch by October 2025 and review impact by October 2026.
